The central drug regulator has asked the Centre to consider including heart valves, orthopaedic implants and intra ocular (eye) lenses in the National List of Essential Medicines (NLEM) to bring these products under the purview of price caps. This comes months after the price cut of life-saving coronary stents by up to 85%.
These surgical implants are sold at exorbitant prices by large pharma companies and involve chances of unethical practices in the context of a traumatised patient suffering heart ailment and reaching a hospital. Once a drug comes under the NLEM, its price is capped by the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) which would benefit common people...
