1. Burundi malaria outbreak at epidemic levels as half of population infected

A serious outbreak of malaria in Burundi has reached epidemic proportions, killing almost as many people as the Ebola crisis in the nearby Democratic Republic of the Congo. The outbreak in the tiny Great Lakes country has infected almost half the total population, killing about 1,800 people since the beginning of the year. According to figures gathered by the World Health Organisation, almost 6 million cases have been recorded since the first week of January to the end of July, with infections reaching crisis levels in May.

2. Dengue epidemic declared in Philippines, over 600 dead and nearly 150,000 cases this year

A dengue epidemic has been declared in the Philippines in the wake of more than 600 deaths and over 146,000 cases of the disease having been recorded in 2019 alone – a 98% increase from the previous year. Several other countries in the Western Pacific region such as Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Singapore, and Vietnam have been dealing with an increase in dengue cases and deaths this year, according to the WHO. According to the most recent data in Philippines , there were 10,502 new cases in the week of July 14 to 20, a 71% increase from the same week in 2018.

3. Ebola virus disease in Democratic Republic of the Congo

Rwanda is taking emergency measures to try and stop the Ebola virus from spreading across the border from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. As of 6 August, a total of 2781 EVD cases were reported, including 2687 confirmed and 94 probable cases, of which 1866 cases died (overall case fatality ratio 67%). Of the total confirmed and probable cases, 56% (1572) were female, and 28% (791) were children aged less than 18 years.
