We all know that fruits are good for us as they are rich in vitamins and fiber, low in calories and refreshing. Usually, when we think of fruit, what comes to our minds is the average, garden-variety fruits, such as apples, oranges, blueberries, bananas, etc. But, now there’s a whole new category of fruits called "super fruits."

Pomegranate is one of the super fruits, which has high antioxidant content and is used in many dishes now. Did you know, when you eat a pomegranate, you don’t actually eat the flesh of the fruit, but its seeds.

So question which comes in our mind is that, can diabetics drink pomegranate juice ? Pomegranate being a delicious way to get antioxidants, it benefits in terms of cardiovascular health are significantly notable. People with diabetes are at risk for cardiovascular stroke, they can definitely be benefited from this powerful fruit. Although half glass of pomegranate juice has 18 grams of natural sugar they are attached to powerful antioxidants that prevent a rise in blood glucose levels.

Eating pomegranates provides fiber which offsets the sugar in pomegranate and drinking its juice gives us a surge of antioxidants in shot. It also contains high levels of flavonoids and polyphenols antioxidants which offers protection against heart disease and cancer. And guess what, a glass of pomegranate juice has more antioxidants than red wine, green tea, blueberries, and cranberries.

People suffering from diabetes are more prone to cardiovascular diseases, as constant high sugars causes hardening of arteries. A study was conducted, in which people with diabetes drank 177 ml of pomegranate juice every day, which reduced their body’s absorption of bad cholesterol i.e. LDL and reduced the risk of hardening of arteries.

Pomegranate also prevents growth of tumors due to its anti-angiogenic properties. It also contains natural inhibitors-aromatase which stops the production of estrogen, which reduces risk of having breast cancer.

Other benefits, such as, reduces the possibility of developing Alzheimer’s disease in old age, helps to control wrinkles and help overcoming depression, especially for women in post-menopausal stage. Healthy blood circulation can be maintained in the body, as pomegranate supplies iron to blood, which avoids the symptoms of anaemia, dizziness, weakness and exhaustion.
