The Supreme Court's five-judge Constitution bench will begin the hearing on a plea by the NGO, Common Cause, favoring euthanasia today. The NGO has pleaded to declare 'right to die with dignity' as a fundamental right within the fold of Right to Live with Dignity guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution.

The Supreme Court had referred a plea to constitution bench of five judges, headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra, in February 2014. This plea was in favor of voluntary passive euthanasia or mercy killing wherein a person cannot recover as per medical consultation or suffers from a terminal illness...
