The share of severe acute respiratory illness (SARI) and influenza-like illness (ILI) cases detected across the country has remained largely stable over last month (June).

While ILI cases have accounted for around 12-13% of the total samples tested on each day, SARI cases hovered around 2-3% through the month.

“The fact that such cases have not increased much shows that in most part of the country, the outbreak is under control. However, there may be a wider spread in certain areas where the positivity rate is high,” a senior health ministry official said.

Daily Covid-19 testing increased from 1.24 lakh on June 1 to 2.24 lakh on July 1. However, the share of ILI cases increased from 12.20% to 13.04% between June 1 and July 1.

Both SARI and ILI are conditions associated with Covid-19 but can also be symptoms of other diseases such as swine flu and seasonal flu. Experts say ILI cases are likely to witness a surge with the onset of monsoon.
