Sonologists from across the state have approached Gujarat HC against a rule stipulating a mandatory six-month training course or a qualifying exam for a registered practitioner to operate a genetic or ultrasound clinic or imaging centre. Gujarat HC on Wednesday issued notice to the Centre and concerned departments and meanwhile permitted the sonologists, whose licences have not been renewed, to run their clinics.

The Centre amended the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (Prohibition of Sex Selection) Act (PC-PNDT) in 2014, to introduce two rules Rule 3(3)(i)(b) and Rule 6. Some registered practising sonologists and gynaecologists were unhappy after the authorities did not renew their licences to run imaging centres because they had not undergone the six-month mandatory training or taken and cleared the examination.
