'Sponsor med conference, get live operation demos'
Several hundred patients are readied across India every year for use in live surgeries or procedures to demonstrate and promote a range of medical devices including endoscopes, surgical meshes, catheters, stents and, implants for knee or hip joints. Doctors' associations make crores from these conferences in which patients, mostly poor, are made subjects of live demonstrations in the name of medical training. This is despite senior doctors across the world and in India agreeing that such live `shows' increase risk to the patient and that video recorded surgeries are more effective as a teaching tool.

There is no regulatory body to monitor issues like patient selection, informed consent and post-operative care. Surgeons opposed to live demonstrations say they have seen many instances of them going horribly wrong. Yet, doctors' associations carry on with demos because the money is just too good to refuse.
