The Supreme Court today said that the legally permissible period of 20 weeks for allowing a pregnant lady to abort her foetus must be increased under the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act.

The statement comes in response to a petition by a Kolkata lady to allow her to abort her 25 week old foetus due to a congenital anomaly.

Since 2014, a bill has been pending in Parliament that proposes to extend the legally permissible period for termination of pregnancy to 24 weeks. In the last 5 years, the SC has dealt with several requests similar to that of the petitioner, who also sought permission to terminate her 25-week-old fetus which has a congenital defect. The SC has permitted most women with abnormalities in their over 20-week pregnancies to terminate.
