New data gathered from minute observations of a photosynthesis reaction will provide new avenues of inquiry for the exploration of similar processes in the human eye, according to researchers from the Paul Scherrer Institute.

The international research team – composed of scientists from Japan, Sweden, and France – examined approximately two million protein crystal samples using a free electron laser, which emits short bursts of powerful x-rays.

“It’s like a strobe light,” Jörg Standfuss, a biophysicist and head of the serial crystallography research group, said. “Unlike a flashlight, it reveals flickers of motion in the dark.”
