In the past 4 years, the Tamil Nadu government has de-empanelled, or briefly suspended from the insurance scheme, 337 private hospitals for varying reasons like medical negligence cases and failure to provide basic standards of healthcare. They also pulled up 249 hospitals for low performance and other violations, and 29 for overcharging. But at least nine out of 10 are back on the state's empanelled list. In 2015, 5 private hospitals implanted stents past their use-by date in poor patients covered under the state-sponsored insurance scheme but only received a three-month suspension and now they are back on the list...
