People suffering from multi-drug and extensively drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB and XDR-TB) are left in the lurch with the Central government sitting on the proposal to extend the new drug, Bedaquiline, to Hyderabad and other parts of Telangana. This supposedly wonder drug effectively fights lung TB that has developed resistant to many known medicines. The Centre has granted permission only to 100 patients across the country to use the drug with the fear that unrestricted use could lead to further drug resistance but none are from Hyderabad and with budgetary constraints, its availability in Hyderabad is unlikely in near future. The government has not acted even after repeated follow-ups and two RTI queries...
