Blocked arteries can now be opened within an hour by US hospitals, setting a record time. Due to a vast improvement in science and technology, more than 93% of patients now have their arteries opened within the recommended 90 minutes of arrival. In 2005, this "door-to-balloon" time averaged a dismal 96 minutes but in 2014 it was reduced to 59 minutes and only 39 minutes during one recent quarter. Since angioplasty is the main treatment for a blocked artery, the sooner the blood flow returns to normal, the less chance of damage.

Quite a few hospitals have achieved this by making its emergency responders a part of their cardiac care team. Paramedics now do an extensive ECG and call results ahead to the hospital to get the angioplasty room ready. "Calling from 25 minutes out instead of 5 minutes out can be a savings of 20 minutes of heart muscle." says UConn's EMS Co-ordinator.
