Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a well-known complication of preterm births, which currently represent about 10% of all births worldwide. It remains as one of the leading causes of child blindness and visual disability despite aggressive governmental surveillance programs and educational campaigns. In addition to a very-low-birth-weight (<1500 g) and a very low gestational age (<24 weeks); deficient oxygen regulation (fraction of inspired oxygen) is a powerful predictor factor for ROP and neonatal survival. The purpose of this study was to describe a wide array of peripheral vascular changes using fluorescein angiography in preterm neonates, without high-risk characteristics for developing retinopathy of prematurity, that was exposed to high oxygen concentration.
