The Union Health Ministry is looking to replace gelatin capsules with cellulose-based capsules. An expert committee was set up to look into the matter in March this year and has invited comments within 21 days from all stakeholders, including manufacturers, NGOs, and consumers. While the ministry considers religious sentiments, Drug Technical Advisory Board (DTAB) and pharmaceutical industry are not onboard. The DTAB had already rejected the proposal last year as plant-based capsules were synthetic in origin and could not be considered purely vegetarian. Also, switching over to 'pure-veg' capsules will lead to an increase in the cost of associated medicines...
