A 40-year-old volunteer for ‘Covishield’, the candidate vaccine being tested by the Serum Institute of India (SII), has sued the company for ?5 crore, alleging that the vaccine triggered an adverse reaction, which includes neurological impairment.

He has also demanded, via a legal notice sent to the SII, AstraZeneca and the Oxford Vaccine Group, that the vaccine trial, which is now being tested on 1,600 volunteers in India, be immediately halted.

The participant had visited Dr Zaheer Ahmed Sayeed, a visiting neurologist at Apollo Hospitals, Chennai, after he was discharged from the hospital linked to the Covishield trial site.

Sayeed said that the vaccine caused the neurological damage after all other possibilities were eliminated through a battery of tests, including electroencephalogram (EEG), somatosensory evoked potential (SSEP) test and neuropsychological assessment.

However, on 2nd December, SII refuted the allegations saying that Covishield is safe and immunogenic, and did not cause the neurological serious adverse effect in the participant.

“The incident with the Chennai volunteer, though highly unfortunate, was in no way induced by the vaccine, and Serum Institute of India is sympathetic with the volunteer’s medical condition," it said.

Dr. S.R. Ramakrishnan, who was the lead investigator for the Chennai arm of the trial and had treated the patient, told The Hindu that “he [patient] recovered very well and we treated him as per protocol and he even came back for a follow-up. All the expenses were borne by the hospital,” he said.

The conclusion that the vaccine had not caused the “acute neuro encephalopathy" in the patient was made by the principal investigator of Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute, Ramkrishnan, besides the Data and Safety Management Board and the ethics committee of the trial sites independently, it added.
