WHO on high alert for avian flu
The World Health Organization called on all countries to monitor closely outbreaks of deadly avian influenza in birds and poultry and to report promptly any human cases that could signal the start of a flu pandemic. There have been more than 40 countries reporting outbreaks of different strains of the avian flu since last November, according to World Health Organization officials.

As of 16 January 2017, a total of 918 laboratory-confirmed cases of human infection with avian influenza A(H7N9) viruses, including at least 359 deaths, have been reported to WHO.
