What a Hoax! Founder of the revolutionary Biotech Startup 'Theranos' admits fraud!
In a searing investigation into the once lauded biotech start-up Theranos, the world discovered recently how its precocious founder defied medical experts—even her own chief scientist—about the truth of its now discredited blood-testing technology. She built a corporation based on secrecy in the hope that she could still pull it off. Then, it all fell apart.
As a college student at Stanford, Elizabeth Holmes envisioned a way to reinvent old-fashioned phlebotomy and, in the process, usher in an era of comprehensive superfast diagnosis and preventive medicine.
Theranos - her company was born a decade later. The product was simple - instead of vials of blood, one for every test needed, Theranos requires only a pinprick and a drop of blood. With that they could perform hundreds of tests, from standard cholesterol checks to sophisticated genetic analyses. The results would be faster, more accurate, and far cheaper than conventional methods.
Most doctors and medical experts scoffed and told her it is impossible to get a precise result from the tip of a finger for most of the tests that Theranos claimed to conduct accurately. When a finger is pricked, the probe breaks up cells, allowing debris, among other things, to escape into the interstitial fluid. While it is feasible to test for pathogens this way, a pinprick is too unreliable for obtaining more nuanced readings. Furthermore, there isn’t that much reliable data that you can reap from such a small amount of blood. But Elizabeth Holmes would not take 'No'....
