As illegal 'PG degrees' plague emergency medicine, it is important to understand why it thrived in the first place. Many private hospitals are running residency programmes in emergency medicine and passing them off as masters courses to attract cheap labour to run their emergency departments. Ironically, the stipend or salary to be paid to these young doctors over these three years comes out of the course fees they pay. Due to a huge mismatch in the number of MBBS graduates and recognised postgraduate seats, doctors who cannot make it through the entrance exam for MD and DNB in emergency medicine opt for these courses even if they are unrecognised by MCI, as they help them get jobs in private hospitals...
