The creation of the world’s first ‘three parent’ baby was lucky to succeed in creating a healthy child, experts warned yesterday. The doctors whose work created the unnamed baby, born in Mexico last year were ‘sailing very close to the wind’, a leading British expert has warned. But their 'experimental' technique had a high risk of introducing genetic flaws into the embryo, it was claimed.

The technique is controversial because it involves altering inherited ‘germ line’ DNA that is passed to future generations. This method has been abandoned by other researchers including those in the UK because they gave a high frequency of abnormal embryos.
