With talks of COVID-19 vaccine and its distribution gaining momentum, the Union Health Ministry asked the states to take steps to deal with side effects of COVID-19 vaccine.

"The preparations are underway for conducting COVID-19 vaccinations in the states and districts, starting with certain priority groups. In connection with this, steps need to be taken to strengthen Adverse Events Following Immunisation (AEFI) surveillance following Covid-19 vaccinations to maintain confidence in the safety of vaccines," a Health Ministry official was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

Health Minister Harsh Vardhan, while addressing the first Virtual SCO Young Scientist Conclave said that about 30 vaccines are in different stages of development in India. Two of them, COVAXIN and COVISHIELD, are in the most advanced stage of development, he said.

Earlier today, PM Narendra Modi addressed states/ UTs on the preparations for dealing with COVID-19 challenge and said that the Central government will share the plan of distribution of vaccine with the states very soon.

PM hinted at creating task forces at every level as soon as possible and added that there is a need to keep a close eye on what the major stakeholders are saying given the many uncertainties regarding COVID-19 vaccine.

'We need to make sure that the positivity rate is around 5% and not more. We need to equip the medical facilities even in the most far fetched areas,’ PM said.
